RENEWABLE ENERGY STORAGE COULD PLAY KEY ROLE IN UK AND EUROPE’S TRANSITION TO A LOW-CARBON ENERGY SYSTEM

A new “smart electric thermal storage” system (SETS) has the potential to make a great impact in the UK and Europe as they make strides toward a smarter, low-carbon energy system. SETS allows for storage of renewable energy when demand is low and supply is high. The system can even offer electric heating customers efficiency savings of up to 20%.

Switching to Renewables

As the UK and Europe move forward in their effort to increase proportions of renewable energy sources like solar energy, advancements in electricity storage will be important in balancing the variability of renewable output with patterns of demand. Studies show that if the EU-27 replaced all currently installed night storage heaters with SETS, SETS could provide 54 GW of controllable demand by 2050, save up to 7.4TWh of electricity, and reduce CO2 emissions up to 3 mega-tons per year.

Energy Storage in the UK

In the UK, in particular, SETS has the potential to create 13GW of storage capacity by 2050. This is equivalent to 12% of the UK’s current total installed capacity and could help the country harness output from renewable energy sources more effectively.

Making a Difference

Southern Solar is one such company doing its part to promote renewable energy and the ideas that energy efficiency plays a key role in helping the UK to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels and its impact on the environment. Established in 2002, Southern Solar specializes in the installation of solar thermal and solar electrical systems. With today’s great interest for energy efficiency, conservation, and preservation of our environment, innovative heating products, like SETS, allow for full utilization of power from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.
