A User-Friendly Guide to Solar for the Home

Until quite recently, most people thought of solar panels as expensive and impractical. However, thanks to several significant tax breaks and advances in solar technology, solar power is no longer the sole possession of the elite. More and more people are opting for the clean, environmentally-friendly energy offered by solar panels for the home. If Read the full article…

Solar Energy Plan for Low Income Homes

The White House has recently announced its intentions to make renewable solar energy a more viable option for owners or renters of low income housing. Part of a larger initiative to strengthen the state of renewable energy, this goal involves increasing the use of solar energy in federally subsidized homes by three times the amount Read the full article…

Tesla Offers Home Batteries for Solar Panels

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motor Company, has announced that the same battery technology behind the Tesla car will now be available for homeowners who want to extend the power of their electric solar panels. The goal of these new batteries is to more evenly distribute home energy use between peak solar energy production Read the full article…

Capacity for Renewable Energy Now Greater than for Fossil Fuels

If you’ve spent any time reading about sustainable energy, you have probably heard the term “parity,” which refers to the point when renewables become cheaper than fossil fuels. Many experts say that sources like wind and solar will not be economically viable until a kilowatt of sustainable energy costs the same to produce as a kilowatt of conventionally produced power.

Understanding How Solar Energy Works

Solar power is the most abundant, most renewable resource we have. The sun has produced energy for billions of years and naturally energizes all of the plants on the planet, these plants give energy to animals and power the human body. For decades now scientists have unlocked the secrets of how a plant creates energy through photosynthesis and can duplicate their process using modern technology. Watch the video and find out more about solar energy.

From Oman to India: A Solar Flight Record for Solar Impulse

The record-setting 1,468km (912 mile) flight from Muscat, Oman to Ahmedabad, India took just over 15 hours. It was the second of 12 proposed legs in a historic five-month journey around the world, the first in a plane powered only by solar technology. Piccard and Borschberg will spend four days promoting clean technologies in Ahmedabad and in other regions around India. They will also spend time preparing for the next leg of the trip, from Ahmedabad to Varanasi in the northeast of the country.

Many people want to go solar to hedge against volatile energy prices and reduce their carbon footprint. However, not everybody wants to take the high initial costs and lower their monthly electricity bill – but they are reluctant or just can’t afford to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a pv solar system. For those people the solar industry has come up with some interesting financial vehicles to meet the growing demand for solar: solar lease.

THE VALUE OF SOLAR IN UNLIKELY PLACES Most people assume that solar panels offer the greatest benefit in places with a significant amount of sunshine.  However, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University say that solar energy actually provides the most benefit, in the means of improving human health and minimizing pollution by  reducing the number of coal plants, in cloudier locations like the East and Midwest.  The researchers found that by replacing coal with solar in a state like New Jersey or Ohio, the solar system “would be 15 times more valuable than that same solar system in Arizona.”  In other words, phasing out coal plants and transitioning to solar energy provides greater benefit than bringing solar energy to a sunny Southwest state where solar would mostly replace clean-burning natural gas.
